Belgium Driving Update

As of October 1, in case of traffic jams on highways or multiple-lane roads, drivers will have to keep a central passage for the emergency vehicles.

Until now, ambulances, police, firefighters and other emergency services had to drive on the emergency lane on the far right side of the road. This lane being also a vehicle emergency lane in case of break down, the emergency vehicles were losing some precious time to make their way.

As of Oct. 1, when in a traffic jam, drivers have to move away from each other to allow a corridor for the emergency services. This has to be done immediately; drivers shouldn't wait until they see the emergency services coming.

If driving on a two-lane road while approaching a traffic jam, the drivers on the left lane will have to go as far left on their lane as possible and the drivers on the right lane, as far right as possible.

If more than two lanes, the drivers on the left lane will go as far left as possible and the drivers on the central and right lanes, go as far right as possible. See picture above.
