Teaching Rememberence

Remembrance is a prescient time for bringing people of all ages and backgrounds together to reflect upon the service and sacrifice of the Armed Forces, and to join together in the hope for a brighter, peaceful future.

As the champions of Remembrance and the UK’s leading Armed Forces charity, The Royal British Legion brings the whole nation together on 11 November every year.

A vital part of our work is to support the teaching of Remembrance across the UK, from schools to youth clubs to individuals who simply take an what we can learn from the wars of the past.

Teaching Remembrance is key to understanding how modern diverse Britain was created and the shared heritage of service and sacrifice across all the UK’s communities. It also allows us to better comprehend what those who served, both on the front-line and at home, went through. The benefits of these lessons are vast, particularly for children and teenagers.

Through our teaching materials, everyone can access and learn about the heritage and tradition of Remembrance.

Get on your bike and…

- go for a ride along the water’s edge! visit museums and castles!

- discover heritage listed by UNESCO!

- enjoy the local gastronomy!

- retrace the footsteps of Vincent Van Gogh in Borinage and explore the mining heritage!

The basic idea of the Cycle Route Interchange Network is simple. It allows you to cycle from one numbered interchange to the next one.

At each interchange a green and white signpost points you in the direction of the next interchange.

This leads to a much more flexible way of cycling around the countryside than by following stipulated routes. Now you can mix and match to create your own cycle route. You don’t even need a map.

Update to Combined Accommodation Assessment System (CAAS) for Service homes

Update to Combined Accommodation Assessment System (CAAS) for Service Homes

The Combined Accommodation Assessment System (CAAS) will be updated on 1 October 2020 to bring CAAS charging in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales in line with England by introducing a location assessment based on access to local services.

This step has been included in policy for England since 2016 and means that all Service Family Accommodation (SFA) in the UK will be charged using the same measure.

This will deliver a fairer application of the UK Location Factor to all SFA across the UK. For more information please visit the Combined Accommodation Assessment System: the new accommodation charging system explained page.

The CAAS for service family accommodation (SFA) is the method of setting charges in the UK and overseas and replaces the 4 Tier Grading (4TG) System (except Germany).

CAAS is a fairer and less subjective system than the 4TG System, and ensures that charges for SFA are set in accordance with modern, nationally recognised standards (utilising the Department of Communities and Local Government Decent Homes Standard.

Where charges increase there will be transitional protection that will set a maximum cap for the increase in any single year.

Belgium Driving Update

As of October 1, in case of traffic jams on highways or multiple-lane roads, drivers will have to keep a central passage for the emergency vehicles.

Until now, ambulances, police, firefighters and other emergency services had to drive on the emergency lane on the far right side of the road. This lane being also a vehicle emergency lane in case of break down, the emergency vehicles were losing some precious time to make their way.

As of Oct. 1, when in a traffic jam, drivers have to move away from each other to allow a corridor for the emergency services. This has to be done immediately; drivers shouldn't wait until they see the emergency services coming.

If driving on a two-lane road while approaching a traffic jam, the drivers on the left lane will have to go as far left on their lane as possible and the drivers on the right lane, as far right as possible.

If more than two lanes, the drivers on the left lane will go as far left as possible and the drivers on the central and right lanes, go as far right as possible. See picture above.

BIG Survey 2020

AFF 2020 Big Survey - FAM

The MOD is looking at how housing will be provided to Service personnel and their families in the future. This is the Future Accommodation Model (FAM) and any changes will apply to all Service personnel, whether married or unmarried.

The MOD is currently running a pilot of FAM in three Service locations across the UK. The Army pilot is in Aldershot.

Whilst the MOD is piloting FAM and deciding what the future of Army housing will be, it is important that Army families have a chance to feed back their views.

Please complete this survey to provide your views and feedback and help influence the outcome of the decisions being made.

Are You Eligible For The Free Flu Vaccine This Year:

Flu vaccine

The flu vaccine is a safe and effective vaccine. It's offered every year on the NHS to help protect people at risk of flu and its complications.

This page is about the flu vaccine for adults.

Find out about the children's flu vaccine

The best time to have the flu vaccine is in the autumn before flu starts spreading. But you can get the vaccine later.

Flu vaccine and coronavirus (COVID-19)

Flu vaccination is important because:

if you're at higher risk from coronavirus, you're also more at risk of problems from flu

if you get flu and coronavirus at the same time, you may be more seriously ill

it'll help to reduce pressure on the NHS and social care staff who may be dealing with coronavirus
