112 App for Emergency Services, Belgium-wide

Did you know there’s an app for contacting the emergency services in Belgium?

Once you’ve registered, the 112 app can be used if you need emergency assistance from fire-fighters, an ambulance or the police in Belgium and is free to use.

Advantages of using the app compared to calling 112:

  • 3 in1: You can quickly and easily select which emergency service you need.
  • Location: The emergency call centres can track your location much more accurately.
  • Additional Info: The emergency services will refer to any additional information you’ve saved on your profile to tailor the response to you. For example, they will see immediately if you are deaf, have a heart condition or are allergic to certain medications.
  • Alarm: If you have fallen or are unconscious and the emergency services are struggling to find you, the emergency call centre can sound an alarm via your phone to help alert the team to your location.
  • Chat: if you are unable to speak or to hear the emergency call centre can activate an instant message functionality.
  • Internet free: the app is not reliant on a WiFi or data connection.

The 112 app is available for download on both Android and Apple devices, including our official Osprey iPhones.

The Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust (the Trust) are pleased to let you know that the Servicewomen: Seen and Heard programme is now open and ready to welcome new applications!

Following the popularity of the programme in 2024, the Trust conducted further research with servicewomen from all three armed services, via several meetings and discussions, to discover more about their current needs and challenges to ensure this year’s programme hits the mark. The Trust would like to thank everyone who shared their experiences to help shape the programme for 2025.

What’s the programme all about?

  • Physical health support for servicewomen is enhanced through comprehensive initiatives that address their unique needs and are complementary to statutory services.
  • Mental health and wellbeing support for servicewomen is strengthened through targeted initiatives that address their unique needs and are complementary to statutory services.
  • Provision of comprehensive education on servicewomen’s health challenges – to inform accessible, effective, and long-term solutions.

Applicants can apply for a grant of between £25,000 and £100,000 towards a project delivered over a period of two-years.

Who can apply?
The Trust invite applications from:

Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust: Over £300k awarded to enhance Early Years provision for Service Families

Over £300K awarded to enhance Early Years provision for Service families
Ten projects by nurseries and childcare settings across the UK have been awarded a share of £300,000 in grants to help forces families access early years education - in the latest round of grants from the MOD's Armed Forces Families Fund.

The projects, which will also provide development and upskilling opportunities for early years staff, will work to further improve educational experiences for young children from service families as part of the Fund's Early Years programme.

“Congratulations to the recipients of this year’s Armed Forces Families Fund: Early Years programme. These projects and the meaningful change the funding will create, allows the organisations to enhance their services to mitigate the challenges faced by young Service children and their families, due to military life” - Debra Barton, Early Years Specialist Lead, Ministry of Defence.

Providing better learning environments
·       Each project will address at least one of the following outcomes:
·       Increased capacity to accommodate more service children.
·       Enhancing learning environments by improving provisions and resources to support service children with special educational needs/or disabilities (SEND).
·       Providing targeted environments for early years practitioners to better meet the unique needs of service children.

Enriching learning experiences
Serving Aldershot garrison, the Aldershot Garrison Preschool will use their award of £23,960 to provide specialist training for all staff - through a series of specialised training sessions to support staff in gaining more confidence in their roles and becoming better prepared to handle a wide range of situations. This approach will lead to improved outcomes for the children both academically and socially.
CEO, Julie Mounfield, told us:
"We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded this significant funding, which will provide our early years staff with specialised training, including SEN training and behaviour management.
This investment will enhance staff confidence, improve professional standards, and create a more supportive and inclusive environment for the children in our care. By equipping our team with the skills they need, we are ensuring better quality standards in the workplace and making a lasting impact on both our staff and children.
The difference this will make is truly incredible, and we are excited to see the positive outcomes for everyone involved."

Inspiring creativity and imagination
Creating exciting, engaging and holistic opportunities for young service children is at the heart of RAFAKidz Honington’s mission, and their award of £13,334 will transform an outdoor space designed to support children with special educational needs (SEND).
The preschool has service children who require additional support with behaviour, speech and language and separation anxiety speech and language and separation anxiety, particularly those affected by parental deployment. This funding will enable the creation of a space equipped with tailored resources that promote the development of muscular strength, gross motor skills, concentration, critical thinking, and hand-eye coordination.

Supporting the emotional cycle of deployment
RAF Lossiemouth is the UK’s second-largest operational base, with around 2,500 serving personnel stationed there and numbers expected to rise.  Deployments vary in length, and limited communication often leaves children feeling uncertain and disconnected. This recurring cycle can heighten anxiety and impact a child’s sense of security, making tailored support in early years settings essential.

The ‘Development Creative Play Kit Training’ project will focus on supporting children through this emotional impact of deployment. With Moray Council awarded £49,954 to create play kits for military families.

Speaking on the vision of the project, Hazel Sly, Early Years Service Manager shared:
We are delighted that Moray Council has been awarded funding through the Armed Forces Family Fund: Early Years Programme. In partnership with Starcatchers and with strong links to both RAF Lossiemouth and 39 Engineer Regiment, we will be developing creative play resources and delivering meaningful professional learning for early years practitioners. The project will begin in one area and grow from there, with a focus on sharing learning across Moray where Armed Forces families are part of many local communities. This project complements wider work already happening across the council to ensure Armed Forces families are supported throughout their child’s learning journey, from early years through to secondary and beyond.”

Giving every child a great start
Anna Wright, CEO of the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust, concluded: "For armed forces families, access to early years education and childcare - from settings which really understand the unique experiences and needs of children in those families - is absolutely vital to giving every child a great start. We're looking forward to seeing all of these projects start their work with the very youngest members of the armed forces community, and for all of the related benefits they bring for families across the country."

Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust: Over £290,000 to support those with seldom heard needs in Armed Forces communities

Over £290,000 to support those with seldom heard needs in Armed Forces communities
Ensuring under-represented voices in armed forces communities are heard is vital.  In the latest round of their Hidden Voices programme, the Armed Forces Covenant Trust (the Trust) awarded grants totalling more than £290,000 to 15 projects delivering accessible mental health and wellbeing support for those with seldom heard needs in armed forces communities.
These projects will focus on improving access to bespoke support for groups whose voices, opinions or needs are not adequately represented or who face barriers to accessing support services.

Trust CEO Anna Wright said: "This programme is all about giving a voice to armed forces communities who may have been overlooked or unheard. Providing tailored, accessible mental health and wellbeing support, these projects will improve awareness and understanding of the of the unique needs of these communities, improving service provision for years to come."

Tailored support from those who understand

Rees Foundation is dedicated to supporting care leavers in the Armed Forces, a group often unheard and overlooked. Their project, From Care to Command, aims to amplify the voices of this group - raising awareness, providing tailored support and ensuring they can access the guidance and resources they need.

Hamish is one of Rees Foundation’s clients. He is an armed forces veteran who grew up in care. “I discovered the Rees Foundation by searching the internet for support. Since connecting, I have found so many like-minded people who have spent time like me in the care system and understand the difficulties I experienced. Also having emotional support, having someone to turn to who understands even now the struggles experienced daily is a lifesaver. It is always a delight to be able to connect monthly with people and being able to talk about issues and be heard and understood freely is also a key part of life for me.

“Rees has been, for me, a place I know I can trust and turn to when I have needed someone and has given me confidence to look at the next day to come and feel worthwhile as a person.”

With an award of £19,767, Rees Foundation will be able to reach more people like Hamish—offering tailored support, guidance, and resources to help them live fulfilling, purposeful lives, both during and after their time in service.

Never Such Innocence Poetry Competition for 80th Anniversary of VE Day, Deadline Approaching, 2nd May 2025

Here’s another opportunity for the youngsters - Never Such Innocence are putting together a poetry collection for Victory in Europe (VE) Day.

The 8th May 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. After nearly six years of war, German forces unconditionally surrendered on 7 May 1945, to finally end the conflict in Europe. Across the Allied world, millions celebrated, relieved that years of conflict and extraordinary hardship were coming to an end. Yet the news provoked mixed emotions for those who had lost loved ones during the war, and for those worried about friends and family still serving (and fighting) overseas.

Everyone in Britain today has a connection to those who served during the Second World War, either through family or community heritage. In this 80th anniversary year, we remember the struggles that the wartime generation endured.

In addition to the text above, The Royal British Legion has created a wide variety of brilliant educational resources for primary and secondary students HERE which can be really helpful for school projects and to help provide an understanding of WW2.

Never Such Innocence are inviting young people to write poetry to mark this special anniversary of VE Day.

All submissions should be made via the links below by Friday 2nd May 2025.
Individuals can send in their poetry HERE.
Schools/Groups can send multiple entries HERE.

The poetry collection will be shared by NSI soon after the closing date.

Bois de Badour, Hainaut

Feeling like a Walk in the Woods?

Bois de Badour is a mixed forest with several shallow ponds and dotted with traces of the past, like the old gatekeeper’s house and the bridge overhanging  the old railway line, but the main landmark is the Octagonal Building at the edge of the wood, called the Ronde Maison.

There are 3 marked trails to explore that venture through some of the woodland; a 5km, a 10km & a 20km route. But do take care as some of the trails are private; they are the princely family's property!

The Bois de Badour is known for its ‘good mushrooms' spots, in September-October.

The wood is located northwest of Mons. Access at Chemin du Long Boule or Chemin Du Prince. However, the most beautiful access point is near the Ronde Maison at “Montauban” via rue du Canard, 7050 Erbisoeul.

The Cycling Towpaths of Belgium

Did you know about Belgium’s Cycling Towpaths?

There are 1,200km of safe tracks throughout the country to cycle, away from the traffic, with the entire family.

Enjoy a safe, quiet, flat route along the waterways, amongst the sweet scent of nature, listening to the sound of birdsong and bicycle bells rather than hearing the sound of traffic and car horns whilst inhaling exhaust fumes!

The Flemish and Walloon regional governments are actively improving the towpaths (and many abandoned railways) for cycling. Where the towpath has been turned into a modern highway, separate lanes or paths are being built for cyclists. (In the Walloon area this is known as Réseau Autonome de Voies Lentes [RAVeL] - Autonomous Network of Slow Ways.)

Get out this Summer amongst nature.

DIO Service Family Accommodation (SFA) Communications Update - 17th April 2025

Defence Secretary commits to improving homes for Service families

Earlier today, Defence Secretary John Healey announced a new Consumer Charter to improve SFA for personnel and families. This forms part of the Defence Housing Review that is underway following the MOD’s landmark deal to bring 36,000 UK SFA homes back under our ownership.

The Charter outlines a list of commitments we will be making to improve our accommodation service offer for you, including:

•            A more robust move-in standard so that you can have confidence that the home you are moving into will be ready on time and will be clean and functional.

•            Providing you with improved, clearer information ahead of your move, including photographs and floor plans when you apply for SFA.

•            More reliable repairs, including a requirement to complete urgent repairs within a set timeline consistent with Awaab’s Law, and an online portal for service personnel to manage repairs.

•            Raising the minimum standard of SFA with a new programme of works targeted at the worst homes, with up to 1,000 refurbished.

•            Better and clearer communication for you, including a named housing officer for every service family who you can contact for specific housing related queries.

•            A revised, streamlined complaints process that will look to shorten the process to two stages so that Service Personnel and families have a quicker resolution.

•            Modernising our policies to allow more freedom for you to make improvements, giving you a greater sense of pride in your homes.

We know we haven’t always got things right in the past; however, we are already making great progress in transforming the service we provide. Working closely with our suppliers, our dedication to transforming the SFA estate remains our top priority, and we will continue to update you on plans and developments as they happen.

These commitments will be in place by December, and there will be further detail in the Defence Housing Strategy, that will be published later this year following consultation with personnel and families.

The strategy will be driven by a new independent review team of housing experts whose members have also been announced today. The review team will be chaired by former Member of Parliament and housing expert Natalie Elphicke Ross OBE, and includes Housing Specialist from the Army Families Federation, Cat Calder. The review team bring with them a wealth of expertise from the housing sector and will play a vital part in providing independent advice and challenge to ensure the strategy meets the needs of Service personnel and families.

Later this month DIO will be launching a new website that will feature all our latest SFA news, updates and act as a helpful source of information for SFA queries.

Relate at Family Action & the Role’s Impact:
Family Action is a national charity that supports people through change, challenge and crisis across England and Wales. On 1st January 2025, Relate, the largest provider of relationship support, joined the organisation helping us reach even more people and support the creation of secure foundations for children and young people, and safe, supportive relationships for all.

For over 150 years Family Action has seen first-hand the power of family and relationships to shape lives, for better or worse. That's why we speak up for the importance of family in national and local policymaking, amplify family voices and represent the changing needs of families in the UK today.

Whatever family means or looks like to us, it's relationships that matter. With Relate at Family Action, we are able to extend the support we provide with counselling, information, mediation and support to individuals, couples and families from all backgrounds and sexualities, as well as provide expert training for relationship support practitioners.

This is an exciting opportunity to join our organisation and help shape the future of Relate’s social media presence as part of Family Action. You will oversee Relate’s paid and organic social media activity, build brand awareness and drive sales of services and toolkits, whilst also supporting wider Relate at Family Action work aligning both brands.
